Les philosophes were not without their many critics and enemies. One such critic was Charles Palissot de Montenoy (1730 – 1814), who wrote the comedy Les philosophes, presented in Paris in 1760 and which was a tremendous theatrical success. He had, five years earlier, publicly ridiculed Jean Jacques Rousseau in the play Le cercle, ou les Originaux. Both plays digitized by Gallica. A separate preface to Les philosophes was in circulation also and has been digitized by Google Books.
